The xenobiotic metabolizing system of mammalian liver comprises several enzyme families. Each family contains multiple isozymes with different substrate specificity and regulation of gene expression. The functionalization of xenobiotics in phase I is catalyzed by cytochrome P450 monooxygenases, flavin monooxygenases, alcohol- and aldehyde dehydrogenases, epoxide hydrolases, carboxylesterases, etc.
